Each dye surface sits through reflective material, which sends the light back to the optical pickup lens. This results in interpreting the signal.

With so many brands in the market, it seems that DVD writers are gradually making their presence felt. Technology changes rapidly, however, and what is the standard today will again be a thing of the past in a decade.
